Got a new baby crested gecko and worried about how to get it to eat?
Well, probably this is going to be one of the hardest things in your life!
Haha, just kidding!
However, caring for a baby crested gecko comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to feeding them and ensuring they get proper nutrition.
So, you have to be mentally prepared for this!
Okay, I’m ready! What do I have to do now?
Well, baby crested geckos need to eat regularly to grow and stay healthy.
Here is how to get your baby crested gecko to eat:
- Want to do it hassle-free?: Provide commercial crested gecko food specially formulated for their nutritional needs. You can find this at most pet stores or online. Some popular brands I personally love are Repashy and Pangea.
- Give them protein to grow quickly: Offer live insects like crickets, roaches, or mealworms a few times a week. Make sure these insects are well-fed with nutritious food and sprinkled with calcium and vitamin D3 powder before feeding. Use tweezers or a dish for feeding, and make sure the insects are no bigger than the space between your gecko’s eyes.
- Fruits and vegetables are a must: Mix it up with fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables like banana, nectarine, papaya, or baby food, 2-3 times a week. Mix them with commercial food or offer them separately in a small dish. And yes, avoid citrus fruits, because they can upset your gecko’s stomach.
- Feed them when they are hungry: They are more active at night, so feed your baby crested gecko in the evening. You can leave the food in the enclosure overnight and remove it in the morning to prevent spoilage or mold.
Bonus Tip: Keep track of your gecko’s weight and growth using a kitchen scale and ruler. A healthy baby crested gecko should gain about 0.5 grams per month and reach 15-20 grams by 18 months old. If your gecko isn’t eating or growing well, adjust its diet or consult a vet.
I hope this helps…
